Virtual
Video Poker
Video poker
is a faced paced easily learned casino game. There are many variants
of video poker such as Deuces Wild, Jacks or Better, Jokers Wild
and Double Bonus poker. Each of these games are played in much the
same way but each have very different strategies necessary to maximize
the players return on their game play. The basic play is easy to
learn so that even a novice can have fun, but the strategies for
the advanced players can take years to master.
Basic Play
Video poker
is similar to the table top poker game known as Five Card Draw.
In all video poker games, the player makes their bet and then is
dealt a hand of five cards from a newly shuffled deck. The player
then chooses which cards to hold or discard. Unlike Five Card Draw,
the player may discard all five of their original cards if they
desire. Once the hold is chosen, the player then hits deal and the
dealer deals replacements for the discards. The final hand is then
analyzed and the player is paid for the best poker hand they can
make. The payout for each poker hand is determined by the payout
schedule for the game. Each game has a different payout schedule
and pays differently for different hands. The payout schedule is
always displayed on the individual Video Poker game and is the basis
for any game specific strategy.

Hand
Rank
Poker hands
are ranked according to their rarity. Here is a list of possible
poker hands from the lowest to the highest:
High Card
A single high card. Ace is the highest, followed by King, Queen,
Jack and 10-2.
A Pair
Two cards with the same value such as 2 threes or 2 queens
Two Pair
Two different pairs such as 2 fours and two Aces
Three of
a Kind
Three cards with the same value
Straight
The cards form a numbered sequence without a gap such as 4-5-6-7-8.
Flush
All cards have the same suit.
Full House
A hand with both three of a kind and a pair such as 3 Kings and
2 tens.
Four of
a Kind
Four cards of the same value
Straight
Flush
A straight where all cards have the same suit
Five of
a Kind
Five cards of the same value. This hand is only possible if there
are wild cards in the deck. See below for a discussion of wild
cards.
Royal Flush
An Ace high Straight flush
It is not important
for video poker, but when comparing hands with the same rank in
any poker game having two or more hands, the hand with the higher
cards wins.
Wild Cards
Some video poker
games have the concept of a wild card. A wild card is a card which
can be considered any card in the deck. In Deuces Wild, for example,
all 2's in the deck are wild cards. Thus the hand Jack of hearts,
Jack of spades, Three of clubs, Three of diamonds, Two of spades
is not two pair, but a full house with the two taking on the value
of another Jack. The video poker game will automatically use the
wild card to produce the best possible hand for the player.
